A natural answer to health care using complementary therapies

There is a growing dislike of traditional surgery and drug based health care and a widespread in interest in natural answers to health care using complementary therapies, herb based remedies and nutritional answers.

The dictionary definition of complementary and alternative medicine is defined as "diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention which complements mainstream medicine by contributing to a common whole, by satisfying a demand not met by orthodoxy or by diversifying the conceptual frameworks of medicine."

A recent telephone survey on the use of complementary and alternative medicine in the United Kingdom showed a usage of 20%. Herbalism, aromatherapy, homoeopathy, acupuncture, massage, and reflexology were among the most popular, all this in a country with a National Health Service. This level of use may seem impressive but is it quite low compared to some other countries. The differences may be due to a wide range of reasons, in France for instance, many therapies are practiced by trained Doctors.

So why are complementary and alternative medicines growing in popularity? Why are there so many to choose from and why are they so diverse. One of the main reasons, I believe, is that these therapies aim to treat the root cause of a problem, rather than suppress the symptoms. Also therapists talk, take time and give a personal touch, a service unavailable to busy Medical Doctors cannot. There is also the added benefit that many treatments are calming and relaxing an ideal break in this busy world. I don’t believe we can identify a single determining factor for the present popularity of complementary and alternative medicine, what do potential clients of a complementary or alternative medicine perceive as benefits?
Perceived effectiveness, the treatment has a definite positive, result.

Safety, no surgery, chemicals and usually no pain
Holistic approach, a combination of physical and spiritual elements, also options for lifestyle changes, dietary and notional advice
Patient is in control, they are paying and they can leave at any time.
A natural, holistic low tech, “touchy feely” or feel good factor.
Good relationship with therapist, it takes as long as it takes.
Should be non-invasive,
A nice and relaxing experience

There are those who state that there is little scientific evidence of results, that it is impossible to measure the effectiveness of such processes. But in our society anything that doesn’t work, doesn’t last. People don’t keep going back, or telling friends and family, if they are not happy with the process. The range of therapies to choose from is quite staggering, and for more information on how to choose the right complementary back pain treatment for you go to www.backpainloss.com
